Why ICT is important in Education today?

In recent years there has been a groundswell of interest in how computers and the Internet can best be harnessed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of education at all levels and in both formal and non-formal settings. Nowadays many countries set as their priority mastering the basic skills and concepts of ICT as part of the core of education, alongside reading, writing and numeracy. Integration of ICT in the education can help the promotion of equal opportunities to obtain education and information, develop a system of collecting and disseminating educational information, promote technology literacy of all citizens, especially for students and increase a variety of educational services and methods.

The use of ICTs helps improve the quality of education as following:

  • by increasing learner motivation and engagement
  • by facilitating the acquisition of basic skills
  • by enhancing teacher training

However, the potential of each technology varies according how it is used. There are at least five hierarchical levels at which technologies may be used: presentation, demonstration, drill and practice, interaction, and collaboration. If technology is to be used for representation and demonstration only, investment in computers and connectivity may not be justifiable. On the other hand, the potential for interactive and collaborative learning can best be achieved by networked computers and connectivity to the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web (abbreviated WWW or the Web) is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), interlinked by hypertext links, and accessible via the Internet.

WWB has been central to the development of the Information Age and is the primary tool billions of people use to interact on the Internet. Web pages are primarily text documents formatted and annotated with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). In addition to formatted text, web pages may contain images, video, audio, and software components that are rendered in the user’s web browser as coherent pages of multimedia content.
